Replay of the French Secretary of State in charge of the SSE Marlène Schiappa’s speech at the UN Side-Event on the 22nd July
On the 22nd July, States and international organisations of the social and solidarity economy (SSE) gathered at the UN in New York at the initiative of UNCTAD, ILO and the Spanish Ministry of Labour and Social Economy to demonstrate the importance of acting internationally to promote the SSE.
The event aimed to promote awareness and support for SSE as a key agent of the ecological and social transition. The speakers were also able to testify to the commitment of the parties to support the international resolution defending the SSE at the UN. As a reminder, the UN Inter-Agency Task Force on the Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE) is working in collaboration with Pact for Impact to bring a resolution on the role of SSE in achieving the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs to the 77th session of the UN General Assembly starting on 13 September.
Marlène Schiappa, French Secretary of State in charge of Social and Solidarity Economy and Associative Life, intervened not only to recall the role of all in the promotion of SSE at national and international level, but also to testify of France’s involvement in this draft resolution.
The Minister highlighted SSE as « the bearer of solutions to what our production and consumption models of tomorrow should be », i.e. models that are « more sober, more ecological and more socially just ». She assured that France strongly supports « the combination of SSE principles, values and practices » as « an engine of economic and social progress and resilience » and insisted that « SSE must move from the margins to the norm and collectively. »
The cooperative aspect of SSE was also supported, and the Minister stressed that a UN resolution for SSE would facilitate the cross-border initiatives that SSE invites.
